Ben Gets Six but Heat takes its Toll

On the hottest day of the year Ben Ryder picked up six wickets for the 1st XI but it wasn’t enough as the team failed to reach the opposition’s score

The 1st XI travelled to Downham and Bellingham in a double header as temperatures peaked at 35C.  Owen Harrisson and Tyler Wassell opened the attack but it was captain Ricky Dale (1 for 27) who picked up the first wicket with the score on 33.

“Would be” overseas player Josh Hunt made his first appearance for 2 years and was straight in the thick of it bowling 10 overs on the bounce.  Josh picked up 3 wickets (3 for 40) including an outstanding catch from Cameron Archbald who was the stand in keeper for the day.  Ben Ryder was then brought on and immediately made a difference removing the remaining opposition by taking 6 wickets for 24 in just 39 balls and again including a spectacular catch from Rob Kennett on the boundary.  It was a great effort in the field and with the ball on an unbearably hot day as the team bowled the home team for 188 in the final over of the innings

The heat had taken its toll on the including Dylan Lee who had to retire from exhaustion while on 25 and wickets fell regularly with the team bowled out for 110 in the 32nd over

The 2nd XI also played Downham and Bellingham. Having lost the toss they also had to field in the heat.  The visitors scored well initially but were pegged back after Jake Mitchell (1 for 50) removed the danger man and some good bowling from Glenn Kennett (3 for 32) and Linc Bryden (2 for 40) left Will Cosstick to pick up 3 for 21 at the end as the opposition was bowled out for 215 again in the final over of the innings

After tea Simon Cosstick (49) and Alan Hampton (57) got the team off to the perfect start and John Heatley (61no) carried on the work ably supported by Glenn Kennett as the team reached the target in the 46th over  for the loss of just 3 wickets keeping the 2nds at the top of the league

The 3rd XI and Sunday Xi didn’t have a game this week
