Memorial Match Day Ends 2022 Season

Memorial Day 2022 - Bapchild XI v Roy Lincoln XI

Bapchild CC held its Memorial Match Day last Saturday which brought the 2022 season to a formal close

This year’s Memorial Match Day was even more poignant as our Queen lays in state and the passing of two vice presidents this year, Lynn Taylor last month and Dennis Inge earlier in the year.  The inaugural match day started last year in memory of ex Chairman, Roy Lincoln, who passed away just before the pandemic in 2020.   The Club misses them all and a minutes silence was held by the senior players before the start of their match to remember all those that have passed.

The Senior section put together a team to play a Roy Lincoln XI which was captained by his son Jim and made up of ex-players and a number of senior players from the Club and included Matt Lincoln, Roy’s other son, Lee Taylor, Lynn’s son and her husband Glenn umpired.  It was also lovely that Jenny Lincoln, Roy’s wife and daughter’s Victoria and Sally came and watched the match as did vice presidents Mike and Shirley Lidstone, Rodney Bottle and Jan and Steve Harrison.

Batting first the Bapchild XI got off to a steady start with Tom Carey (70) and Rob Kennett (40).  Bowling was tight and the team slowly built on the score (James Weller 25, James Sutton 14 and Joe Mills 14 no) as they reach 183 for 6 in their 40 overs with Andrew Maurice picking up 5 for 33 and Adam Larking 1 for 28.   William Cosstick, Lee Taylor, Adam Larking and Matt Barraclough all picking up a catch a piece.

After tea the Roy Lincoln XI started aggressively with Lee Taylor (15) before falling first to Adam Rayner.   Ricky Dale had Andrew Maurice caught by Adam Rayner for a fine 61.  Chis Holman was caught by Tom for 2 while Matt Barraclough was run out for 14 and Steve Botting caught for 0.  Captain Jim Lincoln put his team back into contention with an impressive 54 supported by Alan Hampton 12 and not so much by Adam Larking for 0.

Jim was caught in the second to last over leaving his brother Matt and William Cosstick to score 8 off the last over.  Fine bowling from Tyler Wassell saw Matt (6) hole out on the third ball leaving Lee Cogger and Will needing 8 from the last 3 balls with one wicket remaining.  Only 4 more runs were scored leaving Bapchild CC just winners by 3 runs.  Ricky Dale 5 for 42,  Harry Mantle 1 for 25, Tyler Wassell 1 for 30, Adam Rayner 1 for 39

A BBQ (food donate by Eric and Julie Philips) and drinks were had afterwards as the game was re-lived and many past stories were shared and over £220 was raised for one of Roy’s favourite charities The Primary Club

Earlier in the morning in memory of Roy, who was the founder of a colts section at Bapchild , a Broncos team and a Bears team had been selected to play against each other.    Broncos captain Adesh Smith won the toss and elected to bat first in this 20 over a side match.  Pick of the Broncos batsmen were Aaryan Rajgor hitting 22 runs and William Roe contributing with a useful 13 runs to help bring the Broncos score to 122              Pick of the Bears bowlers was Dylan Smith finishing with 3 overs 2 wickets for the loss of just 13 runs.

Bears captain Joshua Ingram opened the batting hitting 27 runs in his innings and was backed up by Jay Sharma 15 and Ben Hooker 14 to bring the game to a nail biting conclusion.  Pick of the Broncos bowlers were Winston Roe with figures of 2 overs 2 for 7 a superb effort on his part            Four runs were required off the last over and with a wicket mid-over  the pressure mounted and with the scores level with just one ball to go the Bear’s last two batsmen at the crease scrambled what they thought was a winning single but Noah Gear was in fact run out meaning the game had finished as a draw. A good mornings cricket was had by players parents and coaches alike and was a fitting tribute.

A wonderful day to remember our friends that have passed and to end another season at the Club.
