A great game of cricket was seen at Cobham on Saturday as the 2nd XI tied their match against the league leaders
Bapchild elected to Bat and got off to a reasonable start (Robert Kennett 17) against a good bowling attack but a couple of quick wickets put pressure on. Glenn Kennett (13) and Adam Watson (11) steadied the ship but wickets just before and just after the half way stage meant the team found themselves 57-5. Lee Cogger (33 no) played a captain’s innings batting through to the end and with a quick fire 27 from Tyler Wassell and further support from Lincoln Bryden (20) the team reached 154 for 9 in their allotted 46 overs.
An early runout from Steve Pumfrett using some fancy foot work spurred on opening bowlers Tyler Wassell (3 for 38) and Ashley Bax (1 for 21) to pick up more early wickets and the home team found themselves 12 for 3. A change of bowling brough two more wickets in two overs from Glenn Kennett (1 for 42) and Shiv Patel (2 for 33). Another wicket fell and Cobham were 68 for 6. In similar style to the Bapchild innings one player carried his bat and was supported by his fellow team mates. With two overs to go and two wickets standing Cobham need just eight runs. A tight over from Adam Watson (1 for 8) picked up a valuable wicket in the penultimate over meant the last over the game could go either way. Ashley Bax stood up to be counted and bowled superbly and with just 2 runs needed win off the last ball the team restricted Cobham one to create a tie. It can only be described as the the right result where both teams played the game competively but more importantly in the right spirit.
The 1st team entertained Bettshanger at Radfield hill and decided to put the visitors into the field. The team got off to a reasonable start Ricky Dale (44), Callum Leary (29) but wickets fell regularly and at 127 for 6 looked like it would be low scoring game. A good knock from Chris Knope (29), returning American Football Star Cameron Archbold (25) and youngster Willian Cosstick (17) meant that the team reached a very presentable 201 before being bowled out in the 46th over.
After tea Owen Harrison (2 for 33) picked up the opening batsman early and while the top order all scored none got settled as Alan Hampton (1 for 24 off 10 overs), Ricky Dale (4 for 30) and Adam Rayner (2 for 33) bowled out the visitors for 131 in the 45th over
There was no 3rd XI game this week
The Sunday XI travelled with just 10 men to Leeds and Broomfield and was put into the field. Opener and Sevenoaks Vine player Max Atken took on the bowling immediately and although he was dropped twice with hard chances score freely on a small and fast out field. Owen Harrison bowled well and was rewarded with wicket and although Lincoln Bryden (3 for 52) stemmed the flow for a while home team continued to score freely reaching 364 for 6 in their allotted 40 overs
Only Thomas Carey (74) managed to show and similar form in the Bapchild innings and the team were all out for 138 in the 30th over.
However, throughout the match the team’s spirit and attitude never wavered and it was good to see that they applied themselves to which the club can be proud. Even on the second last ball of the L & B innings the Chairman took one for the team (see below) diving for a catch off Tom Carey ……….. needless to say he still dropped it !!!!
