Not the best weekend of cricket for Bapchild last weekend as all four teams lost
The 1st XI were at home to Walmer and after a rain delayed start decided take to the field hoping to take advantage of a drying wicket. Unfortunately the visitors got of to a good start with the opening pair putting on 100 run stand. Matt Lewis (4 for 67) and Ricky Dale (1 for 27) finally removed the openers and some good bowling from Matt supported by Alan Hampton (2 for 46) meant the Walmer were restricted to 220 off the reduced 42 overs for the loss of 8 wickets.
Adam Larking (47) got the team off to a good start but wickets fell regularly with only Lee Taylor (40) and Callum Leary (23) putting up any resistance as the team was all out for 160 in the 41st over. However a valuable 6pts scored.
The 2nd XI travelled to Hartley to play their 4th XI off the back of two opening wins. The toss decided the game as Bapchild were put into bat on a very damp and lively pitch. Only Lee Taylor (17) and John Heatley (10) reached double figures as the team was bowled out for 78 in the 34th over.
James Weller (2 for 10) and Robert Kennett (1 for 5) picked up wickets as skipper Nick Page used 7 bowlers trying to break through but Hartley reached the target in the 26th over
The 3XI travelled to Lordswood (3rd XI) and choose to field. The Chaiman opened the bowling and tried to make a game of it but and excellent two spells from William Cosstick (2 for 37) kept the runs down and made the initial breakthrough. Michael Neame (0 for 54) ruined the afternoon for anyone who selected him in their fantasy team but a nice cameo from Tony Hadfield (0 for 34) restricted the home team until the Chairman returned to pick up 3 wickets at the end of the innings. Lordswood had reached 226 for 7 in their 40 overs.
After tea the team struggled to find any batting prowess with the highest score being Extras (9) as Bapchild found themselves bowled out for 46 in 14.2 overs.
The Sunday XI had their first game of the season playing at home against Stone-in-Oxley. Put into bat the team lost a couple of early wickets but James Weller (30) and Joe Cooper (35) put on a stand. Joe Mills (41) and Tom Carey (15) pushed the score on and a nice little knock from Nick Page (31) at the end of the innings meant the team reached 184 for 7 in their 40 overs.
Opening bowlers Owen Harrison (1 for 32) and Ben Cooper (0 for 26) bowled well but to little avail as the visitors got off to a solid start. Joe Mills joined the attack picking up 4 for 53 but unfortunately with little room to build pressure Stone-in-Oxley reached the target with 10 overs and 4 wickets to spare.
However the game on Sunday saw a new era at the club with the inauguration of newly appointed captain James “Trump” Sutton. Wearing the famous red tie James tossed the coin and started his first 100 days with promises to make Bapchild Cricket Club GREAT once again and promises to build a wall around the ground to keep the rabbits out.
We wish James all the best for the season
