Josh on his way to a "Flake and Strawberry Sauce" 99 at Street End - part of the 391 runs scored off 40 overs by the team

The Sunday 1st XI finished the Club’s League Season fixtures with a record breaking 391 runs

For the last league game of season Bapchild visited Street End on an overcast Sunday afternoon and with nothing for either team to play for expectation of a run of the mill game were high.  Put into bat by the home team, openers Joshua Hunt and Steve Roberts started steadily, scoring 7 off the first 3 overs and it looked like expectations were going to be met.  From that point on it was everything but ………   Josh’s pull shot into the field for six started an onslaught on the Street End bowling attack that never eased.  64 runs off the next seven overs brought the score to 73 off the first 10.    66 off the next 5 overs moved the total to 139 and Josh passing the 50 mark.  At 146 Bapchild Steve was caught just 4 runs short of his 50.  Joined by Joe Mills, Josh continued to hit the ball around the ground until joining Nick Page and James Sutton in the “Flake and Strawberry Sauce Club” by missing out on a maiden century by just one run and getting a 99. The score 161 off 17.2 overs.

Cameron Archbold stepped up next and after a couple of maidens let leash, scoring a rapid fire 56 before being caught. The partnership had add another 76 in just 9 overs putting the score on 237 off 27 overs.  With just 13 overs left the talk of beating the club’s Sunday record of 328 started to be hinted at.  Dylan Lee joined Joe, and with Joe playing the mature anchor role, Dylan scored freely with 103 runs being coming of the next 10 overs with both players reaching their half centuries.   51 runs were then scored in the last 3 overs with Dylan being run out on 82 but allowing James Sutton to play a masterful Dilshan off the last ball of the innings and Joe Mills scoring an excellent 70 not out.    The score 391 for 4 off 40 overs   (40 x 4s and 17 x 6s).

After tea Street End came out with real intent but found themselves one down at the end of the first over with what can only be described at the “Catch of the Season” with Joe Cooper pulling the most amazing slip catch diving to his right.  A run out shortly afterwards saw Street End on 29 for 2 but they pressed on and while scoring quickly, a caught and bowled in Steve Roberts first over which he followed up with a spectacular diving run out a few overs later, the home team found themselves on 92 for 4.   A good stand of 94 looked like the game may move to stalemate but Joe Mills joining the eight bowler attack picked up 4 for 17 off 6 overs and the game finished with Street End bowled out for 238 in the 36th over still 153 runs short.

The Saturday first team travelled to Leeds & Broomfield on Saturday.  With both teams promoted the game was played in a relaxed and good end of season manner. The home team elected to bat and played attacking strokes from the outset that left them 96 for 6.  Using 8 bowlers and changing them on a regular basis saw Leeds get to 228 for 9 off their allotted 50 overs with Ricky Dale 3 for 25, Tyler Wassell 2 for 30 and Adam Rayner 2 for 36 picking the crop of the wickets.   Main highlight was Joshua Hunt who struggled to coordinated legs, body and brain while chasing a ball at fine leg resulting in him ungracefully belly flopping 15 feet short of the ball but scoring a 5.8 from the entertained but unsympathetic crowd.

Dylan Lee opened with similar intent scoring a superb 61.  Lee Taylor (26), Joe Mills (29), Matthew Roche  (18) and Alan Hampton (22) all chipped in and the team fell 35 runs short with 15 overs left.

A great game played in good spirit and we look forward to playing Leeds & Broomfield in Division 4 next year.

The twos were home to Leeds & Broomfields 2nd XI who decided to put Bapchild into bat.      Adam Larking (25) started strongly but for the third week in a row the team wobbled and found themselves 77 for 5 and for the third week in a row Lincoln Bryden (37) came to the crease this time partnering with Simon Cosstick (47).    A ninth wicket partnership from James Weller (22) and the Chairman (15) meant the team reached 191 off their 46 overs.

Leeds batted well with the bowling attack finding it difficult to remove their opening bat until late in the game meant the visitors crossed the line after 36 overs and losing only 4 wickets.  Pick of the bowling was Lincoln Bryden (1 for 6) and  the Chairman (1 for 37).

The threes were home to promotion chasing Findsbury who won the toss and elected to bowl.  Thomas Carey (17) started well but wickets fell regularly until Chris Hogg (58 not out)  joined the attack and supported by Rob (Ozzy) Hawkes (37) got the team to a respectable 176 for 9 off their allotted overs

The team bowled well with Drew Gavin (3 for 44), Ben Cooper (2 for 47) and Rob Hawkes (1 for 21) picking up wickets but the visitors reached the target with four wickets and 4.1 overs to spare.

All three teams met back at the pavilion for a promotion party to celebrate the first team’s success.  A great night with a great atmosphere was had by all and a great way to celebrate the end of our Saturday league season

AND FINALLY –  a compliant was put in by the ground staff to the selection committee this week.  It transpires that the ground staff had lovingly cut a bowling pitch specifically for Michael (Nemo) Neame to cater for his “odd” ball that drifts a little down leg-side usually allowing Umpire Mark Collier to  stretch his arms.

Unfortunately the ground staff found out that not only Michael was not playing but also Mark had gone to play for the threes!!   The only positive being that the twos broke their “lowest number of wides in an innings” record for the 2014 season conceding only 3 wides some 23 wides short of the previous best.

Many thanks to Michael and Mark absence for playing a major part in that record.

The Photo graphic evidence below was submitted as part of the complaint.
