Bapchild’s 1st XI vice captain, Dylan Lee, opened the league season with an impressive 134
The 1st XI played their first ever Kent League Division 4 match at the weekend. Westgate were the visitors to Radfield Hill and on winning the toss captain Lee Taylor elected to bat. Adam Larking and Lee Cogger got the team off to a solid start before Lee succumbed with the partnership just 2 runs short of 50. Adam batted superbly passing his fifty with the score on just 71 before being joined by Dylan when Ricky Dale’s wicket fell shortly afterwards to a good slip catch . With the pre-season training accumulating to just 5 minutes throw downs before the match he dispatched the first two balls for four straight out of the middle. A 49 partnership ensued until Adam was stumped on 66. Two quick wickets fell in succession and the team looked like it might start to struggle after the fine start with the score on 133 for 5. Alan Hampton joined Dylan and with a sensible controlled knock they put on 51 and placed the team back in the driving seat. Dylan, supported by the remaining batsman, took control and raced to 134 before being caught deep on the boundary. The team found themselves all out for an impressive 266 in the 49th over.
After tea the opening pair from Westgate came out attacking the bowling scoring 67 in the opening 10 overs. Ricky Dale (1 for 37) and Alan Hampton (1 for 39) slowed their attack and removed both openers. Joe Mills and Matt Lewis both bowled well but the Westgate with wickets in hand continued to attack the bowling. Needing 95 off the last 10 overs the away team sensed an upset but with Adam Rayner (4 for 64) and Tyler Wassell (2 for 47) rejoining the attack 6 wickets fell quickly. Westgate closed the door for the remaining couple of overs falling 34 runs short in their allotted overs.
A good start in the new division
The second XI travelled in the opposite direction to take on Westgate 2nd XI in their first regional league match.
On winning the toss captain Nick Page elected to bowl and looked the perfect decision when the home team found themselves 12 for 4 with Michael Neame (4 for 42), Owen Harrison (1 for 16) and debutant Michael Willis (2 for 28) doing the damage. The middle order rallied for a while and supported by a tail end putting on 30 runs before Glenn Kennett cleared up taking 3 for 13.
Wickets also fell quickly after tea but a steady 27 from Michael Willis and an innings mature above his age by Tom Carey (42 no) it looked like the team would finish on top. Unfortunately it was not to be and Tom run out of partners before winning the match or scoring his 50 with the total sadly 11 runs short of the target.
The threes travelled to Rainham off the back of their win the previous week
Put into the field the team bowled well picking up regular wickets with the home team ending up 165 for 6 off their allotted 40 overs. Cameron Stevens 2 for 27, Ashley Bax 1 for 36 and Ben Cooper 1 for 37 picking up the wickets. Debutant Steve Pumfrett picking up a good run out and catch.
Feeling confident the openers Simon Cosstick (15) and Chris Hogg (33) started well and well supported by Grant Stevens (23) making his return after too longer absence (not that his body agreed after the game!) and debutant Graeme Corner (33) the team almost made it a second straight win but unfortunately came up just 16 runs short of the target in their allotted overs
A good promising start from all teams
