The League season started last Saturday with all three teams in action.
The 1st XI travelled to Ash for their opening game and were put into the field by the home team.
Haris Khan picked up early wickets (3 for 24) supported by Tyler Wassel (5 overs for 16). More wickets fell as Harry Mantle joined (3 for 28) and Ricky Dale (5 overs for 15) joined the attack. Tom Carey (3 for 17) and Joe Mills (1 for 2) finished off the tail end as the Ash found themselves all out for 102 in the 36th over. 8 of the wickets being catches.
The team cruised to their first victory of the campaign in just over 20 overs with Tom Carey being first on the 2024 honours board with a fine 71 no supported by James Weller (25) and Matt Lewis (5) as the team won by 9 wickets
The 2nd XI entertained Margate CC who had narrowly missed promotion last year coming joint top with two other teams but missed out by run rate. The visitors elected to bat and proved to be a strong batting side with only one of the top five failing to score 25+. It was good to Alan Hampton returning after a break in cricket opening the bowling with figures of 9 overs 1 for 27. The bowling attack chipped away picking up odd wickets (Glenn Kennett 1 for 41, Adam Rayner 2 for 47, Tom Gunner 2 for 26 and Jacob Carter 1 for 26) but even picking up a couple of middle order batsman for a couple of runs Margate added to the score with both their 8 and 9 batsman scoring over 30 each. The visitors reached a very respectable 224 for 7 in their 40 overs.
Bapchild in reply lost a couple of early wickets but Nick Page steadied the ship with a sensible 26. Alan Hampton (67) and Will Cosstick (64) then took the game to Margate forcing them to use up valuable overs with their key bowlers. With contribution from Glenn Kennett (13), Chris Wood (23 no) and Tom Gunner (15 no) the team crossed the line with three balls and 4 wickets to spare.
The 3rd XI travelled to Borstal and came a very strong 3rd XI. Fielding first the team got on the front foot with the home team 11 for 3 as Ollier Julier (2 for 28) and Toby Heather (1 for 9) ripped through the top end. The bowling attacked managed to keep them to 57 at the half way point of the innings. However their number 4 batted well utilising a very short boundary but the team kept at it and had a few difficult chances been held the innings could have looked quite different. The bowlers however did themselves proud as did the fielders with effort being put in by all. Special mention to Jay Sharma who on debut at senior cricket went for just 14 runs in his 5 overs. Sophie Hogben (5 overs for 28), Ella Hadler (6 overs for 38) both having a number catches put down off their bowling, George Ward (1 for 15) and The Chairman (1 for 36). Their efforts and the fielding kept borstal to just 176 for 6 off their 40 overs on a very short boundary field.
Borstal bowling put the pressure on from early doors with and only Nathan Glazier (13), Toby Heather (16) and Ollie Julier (15) reaching double figures as the team found themselves all out for 68 in the 29th over.
On Sunday the U14s lost by 6 wickets to Faversham as the home team reached the 97 set by Bapchild with four wickets to spare. Aaryan Rajgor (21 runs & 1 for 10), William Roe (13), Sophie Hogben (10 runs & 2 for 13), Emily Surridge (1 for 15)
On Monday Faversham won again against the U16 side in a very close match going down to the last wicket and second to last over. Bapchild set 133 for 6 in their 20 overs (Aaryan Rajgor 40 retired, Will Surridge 31, Joshua Ingram 16, Simon Farrell 11 no) but were unable to stop the visitors crossing the line despite a valiant effort by all. Sophie Hogben 5 for 8, Ben Hooker 2 for 17, Simon Farrell 1 for 16, Franklin Smith 1 for 24.
