Bapchild Cricket Club

1 win, 3 losses (one very dear)

Minutes Silence 1st XI for Michael Lidstone 25th May 2024

It was with the greatest of sadness that the Club found out on Saturday morning that Michael Lidstone had passed away the previous afternoon.   Mike had been associated with the Club for many years as a player, umpire, groundsman, quiz master, Vice President and friend.   Mike was one of the great pillars of the Club and his loss is our loss.   He played his last game for the Club at the age of 70 because he didn’t want the 3rd XI (made up mostly of students) to miss out on a game because the team was short of players.   His quizzes were legendary as was his humour and knowledge of the game and many of us became wiser on and off the pitch because of Mike.

In honour of Mike the flag was raised to half mast and both home teams held a minutes silence before their respective matches and were joined by both of the opposition teams.  The first team wore black armbands during the match.

Mike will be sorely missed and it is difficult to think he will no longer be down the ground and being a big part of our lives

Our thoughts go out to Shirley, Andrew, Nicky and all the family at this sad time.

The 1st XI were at home to Upchurch who elected to bat.   A strong batting side Upchurch reached 135 before the second wicket fell at it looked like they were on for a large score but the team managed to peg them back restricting them to 224 all out in the final over.   Daniel Covey (3 for 48), Tom Carey (2 for 38),Tom Gunner (2 for 53), Joe Mills (1 for 29), Matt Lewis (1 for 28) all picking up wickets.

Tom Carey (80) and James Weller (23) got the team off to the perfect start reaching 89 before the first wicket. Unfortunately wickets fell regularly with only Matt Lewis (16) being the only other batsman to reach double figures as they finished their allotted overs on 161 for 9.

The 2nd XI travelled to Minster and decided to field and with the home team on 12 for 3 the game moved early on into Bapchild’s favour with Captain Adam Rayner (4 for 38) doing the main damage.  Minister steadied themselves and with some big hitting on a small ground scored 140 runs for the loss of just one wicket as the game moved back into their favour. Toby Heather (3 for 50), Will Cosstick (2 for 43) and Ben Wiebe-Williams (1 for 15) all picked up wickets as the fought back and bowled the Hime team out for 205 in the 38th over.

Wickets again fell regularly as  the team looked to chase down the runs.  Toby Heather batting at no.10 was top score with 38 and Will Cosstick chipped in with 25 but it was not to be as the team found themselves all out in the 37th over for 137

The 3rd XI were at home again this week to Egerton and the visitors put the team into bat.   Lincoln Bryden (18) and Tony Hadfield (15) got the team off to a good start and Ben Gunner (33) and Brian Carey (20) both helped to build the score but wickets tumbled around them as they managed to get to 124 before being bowled out in the 39th over.

Ollie Julier (2 for 18) picked up early wickets but the visitors started to rally until George Ward (1 for 11) stopped the growing 3rd wicket partnership.   He and Tony both followed up with run outs and with good bowling from Thiyagarajan Shanmugem (9 overs for 22) Ella Hadler (7 overs for 20) and Sophie Hogben (6 overs for 19)  Egerton needed 28 from the last 24 balls with plenty of wickets available.    Jay Sharma returned from his opening spell to pick up 2 vital wickets and leave the visitor 14 runs short at the close of play
