Bapchild Cricket Club

1st Team Summary – 2017 Season

With both 1st and 2nd XI teams in the Kent Cricket League the hope was to build on the previous year and look for them to challenge for promotion in 2017.

The 1st team did not get off to the start they had hoped for, losing to eventual promoted High Halstow by 98 runs. The following week they bounced back away to Faversham scoring 278 with Adam Larking (85) leading the fine display of batting. Newly appointed 1st team captain Ricky Dale (4 for 15) helped to ensure the first win of the season as Faversham were bowled out for 129 in reply. The following week was a loss to eventual champions Walmer by 60 runs. Then travelling to Dartfordians the team elected to bat but was bowled out for 117 with only Tom Carey (32) putting up any resistance. After tea Owen Harrison, Alan Hampton and Ricky Dale all picked up 3 wickets as to secure a superb win by 10 runs. Another win the next week against Blackheath thanks to Ricky Dale’s 6 for 13 saw the team reach 4th place. Adam Larking’s 79 against Chislehurst the following week set up another win this time by 82 runs with Ricky Dale chipping in with 4 for 26. The following Saturday saw the best team and individual batting performances of the season. An unbeaten 153 from Adam Larking saw the team reach 301 for 5 dec before opponents Westgate were dismissed for 158 with Owen Harrison picking up 5 for 65. A fifth win in a row, by 70 runs, against Bettshanger meant the team was still in a strong fourth position but unfortunately lost the following week away to 3rd position Frindsbury.

The second half of the season started with another loss against High Halstow. However, the following week the team looked in a great position against Faversham as Owen Harrison picked up 7 for 47 but a battling 30 from opener and captain Danny Haxton saw Faversham reach 141. Faversham then turned the tables and bowled the team out for 93. It was with great sadness that the club learnt the Danny passed away the following day and he will always be remembered with great fondness at Bapchild.

An extremely close game against Walmer saw the team reach 172 (Simon Cosstick 70, Ricky Dale 53) and the home team reach the target with just one wicket remaining (Adam Larking 4 for 58). Bapchild was in a strong postion the following week against Darfordians scoring 271 in their allocated overs (Adam Larking 89) but the rain came with out a ball being bowled after tea. The weather won again against Blackheath the following Saturday. Bapchild had reached 212 for 8 dec after being 3 for 10 but some fine batting by Callum Leary (88) meant the team almost won in a rain affected match as Blackheath held on (68 for 8) with Owen Harrison picking up 5 for 15. Wins against Chislehurst (“Canadian” Josh Hunt 4 for 45), Westgate (Adam Larking 83, Simon Cosstick 78, Callum Leary 61) and Bettshanger (Ashley Bax 5 for 40, Ricky Dale 90*) meant the team would probably have been in contention for promotion had they not had two rain affected matches. They entered the last game in a solid 4th position and although they beat 3rd place Frindsbury (Adam Larking 67) remained in 4th position.

Adam Larking’s 67 on the last day of the season did secure him the Division 5 1st XI batting award with 745 and an average of 43.82. and the Club is extremely proud of his achievement.
