The Club opened their 2024 season with a friendly on Saturday and our first game of the Sunday Kent Village League campaign.
On Saturday newly appointed 2nd XI captain Adam Rayner led the Club against Gravesend CC in a pre-season friendly and elected to field first. Ethan Collier (2 for 6) opened the bowling with Tyler Wassell (1 for 7) and both were in the wickets early on as the visitors found themselves 3 for 3. Ensuring rotation in the bowling to get everyone ready for the season they were relaced by Tom Gunner and Adam himself both bowled well but Gravesend’s number 4 was on a mission scoring 59 quickly. However, Ricky Dale (4 for 20) and Tom Carey (2 for 33) removed the danger and the rest of the middle and lower order and when the rain stopped play the batting team found themselves on 127 for 9. After an early tea play resumed and the final wicket was taken by Dan Covey (1 for 10) just three runs later.
Chasing 130 Tom Carey (27) and James Weller (12) got the team off to a good start and a fine 44 from Ricky Dale and 27 from James Sutton placed the team in a comfortable position and although a couple of wickets were lost right at the very end the team crossed the line with just overs 5 overs and 4 wickets to spare to rack up Adam’s first win as a captain
The Sunday XI opened their KVL campaign with an away match against Offham and once again the team elected to field first. Ethan Collier (2 for 29) again picked up an early wicket and a change of bowling saw captain Tom Carey (2 for 19) get the other opener. Jacob Carter and Sophie Hogben both bowled well but it was Dan Covey’s 4 for 24 that removed the rest of the to order leaving Ethan, Tom and Haris Khan (1 for 18) to return to pick up the tail end. At the end of Offham’s 40 overs they found themselves on 143 for 9. Tom Carey (31) and James Weller (26) again got the team off to a good start but unfortunately wickets fell regularly and apart fro Lincoln Bryden (26) and Dan Covey (11) no one else reached double figures as the team found themselves all out for 116 in the 31st over
